Fascinated by the forms, colours and serendipity of watercolour, Marc Folly has a taste and an understanding for offbeat and complex subjects, often linked to urban and industrial scenes as well as craftsmanship. Through his favourite themes such as the light shining through the windows of a workshop, the ordinariness of interior scenes or fleeting memories, he devises a familiar world, full of memories and sometimes nostalgia.
Marc Folly is another artist included in my new book on abstract thinking. Here is an extract from his interview.
Do you consider your painting has an abstract element?
Yes but not enough. In my case, I seek a balance between figuration and abstraction.
Figuration alone is boring and just a technique. Abstraction can lead to anything.
This border or a way of abstracting reality.
Where does a painting idea come from?
Finding your own subjects, what can I say, is the other big difficulty. Everything has already been painted. But at the same time, ideas to paint come from everywhere and at all times.
Do you plan the whole painting in details or it is rather spontaneous process?
Not in details but I plan, I strategize before painting, I think before and afterwards, during the painting process, there are always surprises. The challenge is to accept surprises, sometimes very different from what I first wanted.
